Wolves sack McCarthy

The Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked its manager Mick McCarthy following very disappointing results in the English Premier League.

The club’s 1-5 derby defeat against West Brom yesterday proved to be the last straw as chairman Steve Morgan decided to pull the plug on the Irish manager.

Though McCarthy has been at the helm of the Molineux for more than five years, fans and the management have started to show signs of grief and have ultimately lost faith on the 53 year old after winning only five out of a possible 25 Premier League matches this season.

In the Wolves website, a notice stated that “The board took the difficult decision to terminate Mick’s contract after a run of form which has seen Wolves pick up only 14 points in the last 22 league games.

“Terry Connor will take charge of team training in the interim until a new manager is appointed.

“The board would like to place on record their sincere thanks and appreciation to Mick and he leaves with the very best wishes of everyone connected to the club.”

The Wolves currently sit 18th in the EPL table and have only won once in their last 11 games.

In the club’s defeat against West Brom, some fans focused their anger on the directors’ box while a few hundred people took to the grounds outside the arena to make their opinions heard long after the final whistle was blown.

The decision to sack McCarthy was made by chief executive Jez Moxey as they wanted to resolve the problem and avoid being relegated.

“We felt the team was only going one way and we needed to act. We’ve got time to get in a new manager and arrest the decline,” he said.

“We did a lot of soul-searching overnight and the board convened by telephone to discuss the current predicament.

“We felt with a two-week break before our next game at Newcastle, and the fact we’ve got 14 points from our last 22 matches, there was enough time with 13 games to go for us to try and retrieve the situation. We felt we had to make the change.

“This has been done with a hugely heavy heart — Mick McCarthy has done a fantastic job for the past five-and-a-half years in an exemplary manner.

“He got us promoted as champions, the first time we had won anything for over 20 years, retained our Premier League status for two years running and we’re still in the Premier League.

“But we felt the team was only going one way and we needed to act. We’ve got time to get in a new manager and arrest the decline.

“We felt if we didn’t do something we would almost certainly be relegated.”
