Wilshere out for five months

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will be out of commission for four to five months after corrective surgery for an injured ankle.

According to a statement on the Gunners’ website, the problematic ankle had been repaired and Wilshere would have to undergo extensive rehabilitation.

‘The initial indications are that the surgery has been successful and Jack will now undergo a prolonged period of rehabilitation,’ read the statement.  ‘It is envisaged that Jack’s rehabilitation will take a period of four to five months.’

The recuperation term will keep the midfielder off the pitch until early next year.  Prior to the surgery, Wilshere had already been out of the Arsenal lineup since the season’s opening due to the aforementioned injury.

‘I’ve had my operation this morning and all went well,’ Wilshere updated.  ‘My ankle is a little bit sore, but I’m already looking forward to working hard to get fit and playing again.

‘I would also just like to say thanks for the many messages of support I have received from you – the fantastic Arsenal supporters.  See you all soon at the Emirates.’

The stress fracture that plagued Wilshere was sustained last June during England’s Euro 2012 qualifying match against Switzerland.  The midfielder took a few weeks rest, but the injury flared up during a pre-season friendly against the New York Red Bulls.

Earlier reports assured that Wilshire’s condition could allow him to return to the field by Christmas.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, the news of Wilshire’s condition came the same day as Robin Van Persie’s announcement that he was in no hurry to sit down to talks about renewing his contract.

‘I do believe you have to look for a right moment to sit down and speak about your own stuff,’ van Persie told reporters.  ‘It’s not only about me, it’s about the team.  We are not talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days.’

‘I still have almost two years left here, so for the moment that’s fine,’ he added.  ‘But I don’t know, we will have to look.’

Van Persie’s departure would mirror manager Arsene Wenger’s recent problem that came with the departure of key players Cesc Fabregas and Sam Nasri.

AUTHOR’S OPINION
Wenger it seems cannot get a break. Perhaps Wilshere’s recuperation will prove to be the best way to ensure his greater performance as a player. Arsenal’s performance as a team, however, is another story. There might be more trouble coming their way.
