ARSENAL midfielder Jack Wilshere publicly declared his support for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger as a possible candidate for the coaching position for the English squad.
This scenario would place Wenger as the person to succeed current coach Fabio Capello, who is set to exit the post after the Euro 2012 competition.
‘I don’t think it would be a bad thing,’ said Wilshere on Wenger taking over Capello. ‘The boss at Arsenal proves it every year.’
Declaring Wenger to be the Premier League’s best coach to date, Wilshere stated that his manager as well as Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson are currently not getting the respect that is due of them.
‘I can’t remember the last time we didn’t qualify out of the [Champions League] group,’ he added. ‘For me, he and Sir Alex are the best in the Premier League, and people questioning them are stupid.’
Wilshere continued that he would be ‘delighted’ should Wenger eventually receive the position.
Other than this recent comment, the Gunners midfielder is currently making the news with an earlier statement suggesting that he was engaged in wagering on their recent match against the Olympiakos – an act prohibited by UEFA.
According to reports, Wilshere, currently recovering from an ankle injury, went on Twitter earlier this week to state declare a 150-1 odds of teammate Emmanuel Frimpong being the first to score a goal during the match.
During the actual match, Frimpong struck a wide shot, narrowly missing the goal, to which Wilshere tweeted, ‘Frimmy nearly won me some money there!’
His message has reportedly been deleted, and replaced with an explanation that he was not involved in any actual money wagering.
‘I didn’t actually bet on the game,’ Wilshere wrote. ‘I know we’re not allowed to! I was only messing #justtobeclear.’
The midfielder is set to be back in action by January.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
The statement about Wenger replacing Capello is certainly the kind of thing one would expect to hear from Wilshere. The bloke practically vowed to devote his life to Wenger’s team when he said he planned to stay with Arsenal forever. But Wenger for England? Remains to be seen. Wilshere might have to convince a lot of people, and he can’t do it simply by declaring his faith in his own boss.
