Wenger tells Arsenal to remain United amidst fear

In an impassioned statement made at the club’s general meeting, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger called for the audience to remain solid in its support for the team.

The Gunners had begun their Premier League season with a disappointing performance of three winless games, resulting in calls for Wenger’s dismissal.  Since then, however, the team have managed to slowly reclaim their form, winning three of the six matches that followed.

Aside from an improved domestic record, the Gunners, currently at 7th place in the Premier League table, have also landed themselves a spot in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

According to Wenger, despite the myriad challenges that await them – the nearest being a road game against Premier League third placers Chelsea – remaining united amidst adversity is imperative.

‘I can see a lot of fear and discontent among you,’ began Wenger, ‘and I can understand that because we live in a world where we fight with people who have extremely high resources.

‘The way we can compete is to try to be intelligent, but as well to be united because it is very difficult to be consistent in football.  We have been more consistent than anybody else in the world for the last 15 years.

‘To stay at the top, top level, we have to be united.’

Starting the season with defeats following the departure of key players including Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, Arsenal have been the target of growing supporter disappointment.  Amidst the unrest from fans, Wenger received the harshest comments.

Critics and fans alike began questioning his contribution and considering the option of seeing him replaced as manager.

Wenger continued, addressing the palpable degree of “scepticism” present during the season’s opening.  He stated, however, that despite the doubts there was an understanding that above all else, the requirement for a unified support for the Gunners was imperative for survival.

‘If we give absolutely everything and do fight together for every single game in every single competition, we can still look back at the end of the season and be proud of our attitude and what we have achieved,’ he said.

The manager also called for the doubt that still lingered towards the club be turned around, and instead replaced by trust in his and his team’s abilities.

‘If I just would like to achieve one thing today it is trust us, this team has qualities, this team will fight – and if you help us to do that I think we will have a successful season.’

The Gunners’ upcoming match against Chelsea will see them go on the road.  For the match they will attempt to pull off a victory despite an abysmal record of 5 losses and 3 defeats in their last 8 away games.
