Highly-scrutinised Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger recently stated that considering his squad’s current position as well as competition in the English Premier League, the idea of winning the title would not be realistic.
According to the manager, the challenge for the club is instead finding better footing than their current spot at 15th place in the EPL table.
‘We are 12 points behind Manchester United and Manchester City – it’s not realistic to say that we will win the league,’ stated Wenger. ‘We have to fight to come back into a much better position, that’s the reality.’
Wenger also addressed hopes of entering at least fourth place, saying that the task ahead would be much more difficult than might be expected.
The Gunners coach advised of more ‘realistic’ goals regarding the club’s overall performance and competitiveness against other teams seeking Champions League qualification.
A few days ago Wenger, celebrating his 15th year as Arsenal manager, stated that his hopes for the club include making it ‘the best in the world.’
‘I live in the present and the future so I hate to look back,’ a more optimistic Wenger told reporters. ‘I use the history to improve, that’s what I want to do.’
Witnessing the club’s slow start, experts and Arsenal supporters have called for the 61-year old Frenchman’s resignation or replacement.
One of the first individuals to jump at the chance and virtually submit his application was former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian stated that he has ‘a strong will to remain in England’ and that his intentions were to manage a Premier League squad again. He revealed that club options for him include Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Axed by Blues owner Roman Abramovich, Ancelotti pointed out the opportunity coming with Wenger’s sub-par managerial approaches.
‘It’s evident that Wenger’s bench is wobbling and that in several months’ time, an English coach will be appointed to replace Capello int he national team, which will free up a place in the club,’ Ancelotti said.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Hats off to the Frenchman for his grasp on reality. Quite a surprise, how he’s let those words fly this early in the season. Nevertheless, it could not have been easy, Wenger facing the press and saying them. One should not completely write off this club, though. A lot can happen in a few months.
