Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is assured of his job for two more years.
Despite bowing out of the FA Cup following a 0-2 loss against Sunderland on Saturday at the Stadium of Light, thus making this their seventh straight season without a trophy, Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis showed full confidence with their long-time manager and stated that he stays at the Emirates.
“We are committed to Arsene and we expect him to see out his contract,” said Gazidis.
The French manager, with a contract that expires on 2014, is expected by the management to finish at the top four.
To help his cause, Arsenal are reported to have £50 million available for Wenger’s disposal to get new players during the summer.
With targets like Lukas Podolski, Junior Hoilett and Matias Suarez who require big funds, Wenger can finally get someone in to lift the hopes of the outfit. He can also start with contract negotiations with Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott in the coming weeks.
The 62-year-old manager insisted that he will stay despite suffering the toughest week in his managerial career.
“We have what it takes at the club and we will add what it takes. But at the moment I believe we are not making plans for next season, we are making plans for the next game,” Wenger said.
“I think we have what it takes at the club when everybody is available, because we had many missing and big, big players, too.
“Our main target now is to focus on the championship. We played away at Bolton and drew 0-0, we beat Blackburn at home and won away at Sunderland, so let’s win our next home game and we will be fine.
“We have played 15 years at the top level and in the top four. It is remarkable consistency and one day when you manage a club, you will see it’s not easy.”
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Truthfully, a very difficult week for Wenger and Arsenal faithful. While some want a new man in charge, others think more players should simply be added. We have two more years to see how Wenger can make things better for the outfit and hopefully some silverware will come his way as he continues on at the Emirates.
