Tevez fined, warned for contract breach

CARLOS Tevez did incur a fine but other than that, he received no heavier punishment.

For breach of contract, the Manchester City striker was slapped with an 800,000-pound ($1.3 million) penalty or equivalent to his four weeks’ salary.

In addition, he was issued a written warning about his future conduct.

But the controversial Argentine striker got no further chastisement from the club’s disciplinary panel.

Tevez, who was suspended for two weeks following his alleged refusal to obey Roberto Mancini’s order for him to come on as substitute during a recent Champions League match against Bayern Munich, can challenge the verdicts.

If he does, the dispute which started after the 0-2 loss at Allianz Arena in Munich can be prolonged for weeks. He has 14 days to appeal against the decision and also the right to a second appeal to the Premier League.

Despite the hovering controversy, City reiterated that the 27-year-old Tevez would only be sold during the January transfer window if another team could afford their asking price of 40 million pounds ($80 million).

Tevez, who has almost three years left in his contract, will still be available for selection to the squad who are currently on top of the league table.

City published on their website five breaches in contract made by Tevez and topping it was “not fulfilling an obligation to participate in any matches in which the player is selected to play for the club when directed by a club official.’’

The club said another violation he made was “not following instructions of his manager and brought the club into disrepute.’’

Tevez had asserted that he did not refuse to play and this could be used by his legal team as basis for a possible defamation charge against City for initially saying so about the striker.

The Argentine captained City and was their top scorer last season during which they captured the FA Cup crown, ending their 35-year title drought.

But Tevez fell out of Mancini’s favour after he expressed intention to leave City and join Corinthians, the Brazilian side he left in 2006 to link up with West Ham.

Before joining City in 2009, Tevez played for Manchester United. He has been training by his lonesome since coming back from a two-week suspension.
