A MEETING between AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani and Manchester City representatives has been set for Thursday over a possible Carlos Tevez loan.
The announcement comes as the next step in the ongoing negotiations in response to the Italian club’s interest in acquiring the skills of the controversial Argentine striker.
Although City have agreed to sit down with Galliani regarding the subject, reports state that the Premier League outfit remain hesitant about releasing Tevez on loan. The Italian executive has commented that the meeting would most probably result in a series of talks, only after which a mutual decision might be settled.
‘On Thursday we have an appointment with Manchester City for Tevez but it will probably not be the decisive one to conclude negotiations,’ Galliani told the Italian media.
‘I don’t think this will be the final day of talks though.’
According to Galliani, the plan is merely to acquire Tevez on loan, with an option to purchase sometime around the middle of next year.
‘We’re not going to take him outright,’ he said. ‘We’re offering a free loan with the right to buy in June.
‘The player wants to come to us and not [France’s Paris St. Germain] and we hope City accept the offer.’
Galliani also revealed that they also have striker Maxi Lopez from Italian Serie A’s Calcio Catania as a ‘standby’ option should the deal with AC Milan fall through.
A possible agreement, however, could also prove beneficial for Tevez. Friction between him and his England squad – especially manager Roberto Mancini – has grown since he refused to play as a substitute during a crucial Champions League match.
After that well-publicised argument, Tevez then flew to Argentina without the club’s permission; there is no word on when he plans to return to England.
Reports had indicated that Tevez was also in talks with PSG, but the French club director Leonardo declared he will not stand in the way should AC Milan close the deal.
‘I will not steal Tevez from Milan,’ Leonardo told reporters. ‘I have not contacted the player and I will not get in between the Rossoneri’s affairs.
‘Even though I didn’t share the views of [AC Milan owner Silvio] Berlusconi which meant it was impossible for me to stay at Milan [as manager], the relations with the club are good.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Wise move on Galliani’s part, asking only for a loan. Understandable, that they’ll need aggressive talent if they want to topple Juventus for the Serie A’s top spot. But Tevez (and his behaviour) as the solution could blow up in their faces over time. Don’t settle for anything final, you never know with this chap.
