CONTROVERSIAL Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is reportedly in the middle of negotiations with Italian club AC Milan in a deal potentially worth £25 million.
Tevez’s advisor Kia Joorabchian was said to have flown to Milan Thursday and to meet with Milan’s vice-president Adriano Galliano and sporting director Ariedo Braida to hold discussions on the 27-year old Argentine’s exit from Manchester City.
Milan are said to feel that despite City’s demand of £50 million in total for the striker, £25 million is a reasonable price considering Tevez’s current inactivity that began two months ago.
For the striker, who is still considered to be in AWOL in Argentina, a move to a different club would end the ongoing series of highly-documented conflicts between him and his current squad. Furthermore, a move to Milan would address his preference for a country with a balmier climate.
The Serie A team stepped up to go for Tevez after striker Antonio Cassano underwent a heart surgery after suffering from a stroke during a post-game trip back to Milan.
The operation is said to sideline Cassano until the season’s close.
Reports further stated that despite the apprehension coming from other Premier League clubs to consider signing Tevez, AC Milan required only that the striker still be capable physically and mentally of taking to the field in full force, despite the stress brought about by the conflict with City.
Tevez joining City’s lineup would address the player’s concerns and desire to find a fresh start, while also addressing Milan’s desire to compensate for Cassano’s absence and enhance their performance for the European competition.
Currently the striker has virtually lost all standing in City after being involved in a months-long conflict starting with his alleged refusal to come in as a substitute in a crucial Champions League match.
This led to a £1 million fine, which was eventually cut in half after a challenge by the Professional Footballers’ Association led to the striker instead being found guilty only of refusing to do warm-ups under Mancini’s orders.
Despite Mancini’s reported efforts to remedy the severed relationship between them, the striker flew unsanctioned to Argentina and did not return after the international break. The PFA had requested that Tevez return to England, to no avail.
‘It’s another week and there are more problems really,’ PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor had said about the tension between manager and player. ‘The situation continues and the longer it goes with him being away the more impossible it becomes to reconcile the situation.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
There is little doubt of any love lost as far as the supporters of Manchester City, and perhaps of the Premier League, are concerned should Tevez depart for the Serie A. And should the deal come through, there is a chance that a happier Tevez would in the future watch his actions and stop being the brat that he’s become currently.
