CHELSEA captain John Terry will be ready for the upcoming Premier League faceoff against Tottenham Hotspur despite injuring his right ankle during training.
The announcement was made after doubts began to arise regarding Terry’s involvement in the upcoming Spurs fixture at White Hart Lane this Thursday.
The injury was sustained as Terry attempted to block a shot during a charity training session at Stamford Bridge. Terry had to leave the field with the assistance of two team physios.
According to an official statement, the injury was revealed to be less serious than previously feared, with Terry only causing slight damage on his Achilles. This minor ailment means that the skipper will still be able to take part in the upcoming match, which could elevate Chelsea to third place in the EPL table.
‘John Terry will be fit to face Tottenham on Thursday despite limping out of Monday’s open training session at Stamford Bridge,’ read the announcement seen on the team’s official website.
‘The defender pinched his Achilles while blocking a shot on the pitch towards the end of the session, and departed for treatment as a precaution, but is expected to lead the side out as normal at White Hart Lane on Thursday night.’
Terry’s availability for the match comes as a relief for the team and supporters alike, after David Luiz and Ramires both missed training due to injuries that put them out of commission from Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Wigan.
But for Blues manager Andre Villas-boas, as well as the rest of the team, there is reason to be optimistic that the two players will also be available for the upcoming showdown.
At the moment, the Spurs stand at third place, trailing runners-up Manchester Untied by 5 points. Chelsea, currently at fourth place, trail the Spurs with a mere 2 points, and United by 7. The winner of the fixture would pose a serious threat to United and current leaders Manchester City.
‘There are still five months to go and people would be stupid to assume we’re out of the race,’ said Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge. ‘We will fight to the last game. Any team in the top six can win it.’
Despite the positive findings regarding Terry’s injury, the skipper is still laboured with the ongoing investigation that accuses him of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand during a 1-0 defeat last October.
A decision from the Crown Prosecution Service regarding the matter is expected to arrive this week.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
You can only imagine the terror setting in on the entire Chelsea squad as they waited for a diagnosis on Terry’s ankle. This would be a bad time for Terry to be put out of the running. They’re this close to breaking into the top three. This is not the time for setbacks.
