Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny has declared his intention to wear the armband and take over as squad captain.
The 21-year old insisted that he has the right set of leadership skills that are required for the position, which is currently occupied by Robin van Persie.
According to Szczesny, he believes that he can command the other club players, and that he is able to grab the attention of teammates.
‘I feel that when I say something, everyone listens to me,’ the keeper was quoted saying. ‘More so on the field than in the dressing room, but that’s more important I think.’
Arsenal are currently nursing a total of 4 defeats in 7 games under the leadership of van Persie, who took over the captaincy after Cesc Fabregas’ departure.
Szczesny stated that the responsibilities that come with the position are those that he believes he can indeed live up to.
Reports are suggesting, however, that the keeper is currently putting talks of contract renewal on hold. Szczesny has also expressed interest in leaving Arsenal for a move to Barcelona.
Despite describing Arsenals as his ‘second home,’ Szczesny also refused to rule out the possibility of hanging up his Gunner kit and replacing it with blue and red stripes – much like a number of other Arsenal players have done.
According to Szczesny, leaving the club would not be a decision motivated by money. It would instead be due to either a ‘very important reason,’ or a move to Barcelona.
The Gunners are coming off a defeat from a 2-1 Premier League defeat to archrivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Inconsistent form has brought about questions regarding a possible dissolution of Arsenal’s Premier League dominance that had endured for 2 decades.
‘You can’t make such a statement after a couple of months,’ insisted Szeczny.
The keeper continued to insist that despite the loss, Arsenal still stand superior to the Spurs.
With the squad currently at 15th place, manager Arsene Wenger had recently conceded their chances of winning the league title.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Perhaps someone should tell Mr. Wenger to make Szczesny watch his words before he speaks to the press. This type of self-aggrandising attitude just brings humiliation, and everyone knows Arsenal have already had too much of that. And as for a move to Barca, they might have enough benchwarmers.
