Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is in danger of having his 8-match suspension slapped by the FA be extended to a total of 10 games should he file an appeal.
According to reports, the footballing body is ready to extend the suspension by one more match – making it 9 games – should Liverpool, after openly criticizing the FA’s decision on Suarez, decide to appeal the decision.
Adding to that the one-match ban that Suarez additionally acquired for his one-finger salute at Fulham fans early this month. That totals to a possible 10-match suspension for the star player.
The previous charge accuses Suarez of throwing racist remarks at Manchester United’s Patrice Evra during a 1-1 tie. The striker’s previous response saw him arguing that it was only a matter of context, and that his words for Patrice Evra were not meant to have any racist colour in them.
The FA’s decision to charge him despite his explanation had Liverpool accusing the footballing body of making up their minds on the matter even before the hearing took place.
Other arguments made by Liverpool towards the FA’s decision include the unreliability of the evidence supporting the claim. It was said that there was no adequate video evidence, and that all the FA had to base it on was the accusation coming from Evra himself.
Speculations point to the strong criticisms from the Anfield outfit to have been one of the causes of the FA’s lack of leniency towards Suarez over his finger gesture at Fulham.
It is further reported that the official written statements and conclusions regarding the racism case are set to be published.
Liverpool have so far made no comment on the possibility of a ban extension.
As it currently stands, the one-match suspension coming from Suarez’s Fulham gesture would see him miss tomorrow’s scheduled clash between Liverpool and Newcastle at Anfield.
Along with that one-match ban came a fine of £20,000, which adds to the £40,000 penalty coming from the racism charge.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
So it looks like the FA are just determined to make themselves look bad in this issue. If they didn’t like the strong comments coming from Liverpool, then they should have given the club some punishment, instead of adding to Suarez’s (although a lengthier suspension for the striker may be punishment enough for the club). Sensitive, aren’t we?
