Spurs trample Hearts en route to victory

The visiting Tottenham Hotspurs demolished game hosts Heart of Midlothian 5-0 during the first leg of their Europa League playoff Thursday.

The Spurs opened the match with an immediate goal – the team’s first goal of the season – by the 5-minute mark, courtesy of Rafael van der Vaart. Teammate Jermain Defoe followed suit by the 13th minute.

Rookie Jake Livermore tallied another to make the Spurs lead 0-3 by halftime.

Aside from a significant drop in the noise of the home crowd, the 63rd minute of the match saw Gareth Bale passing Heart’s Marian Kello and netting the Spurs’ fourth goal of the match.

Finally, with the Hearts finding nothing to counter, Defore crossed for Aaron Lennon who netted the fifth goal by the 78th.

And with that, amidst the noise of Hearts fans attempting to taunt them with chants like ‘Your city’s on fire,’ Tottenham cruised on to claim a win on their first ever competitive game of the season.

After seeing his team dejected as their season opener against Everton was postponed due to the London riots, the victory could not have been more satisfying for Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

‘The first half was fantastic. We moved the ball around quickly and [that’s] how I like to see us play,’ he beamed. ‘They came out second half stronger but in that first half we could have been even further in front.’

‘I just enjoyed watching us play,’ he furthered.

For Hearts manager Paulo Sergio, the turnout could not have felt more different.

‘In the first half we played like someone buying a ticket to watch the match,’ he said. ‘We didn’t press the ball and if you give spaces like that to Tottenham it makes it difficult.’

‘We improved in the second and we were more aggressive on the ball. There is a huge difference between the two teams but we should have done better in the first half.’

The win should prove to be a much-needed morale boost for the Spurs as they prepare to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.
