Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has accepted a three-match suspension handed by the Football Association for charges of violent conduct.
The ban was slapped on Song after video evidence showed him stamping on the leg of Newcastle’s Joey Barton during Saturday’s game – an incident initially missed by match officials.
Song’s suspension will mean he will be out of commission in Arsenal’s upcoming games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Swansea.
A similar sentence was handed out to Song’s teammate Gervinho in another incident also involving Barton. Gervinho’s charges were handed out after slapping Barton after the midfielder accused him of diving in the penalty area.
Arsenal had responded earlier, saying that they did not plan to contest the charges handed out to Song.
They did, however, file an appeal arguing that Gervinho’s three-match suspension was excessive; the appeal was denied by the FA.
Charges were also handed out by the FA to both clubs for failure to control the behaviour of their players. Newcastle and Arsenal are given until Thursday to respond to the charge.
