Rooney fined after night on town

BLAME it on a night out.

Yes, that was the reason why Wayne Rooney was slapped with more than 200,000 pounds in fine by Manchester United since the striker failed to train for the squad following a night on the town.

United coach Sir Alex Ferguson dropped his player from their game against Blackburn, saying the latter ‘hadn’t trained well’ during the week and had a ‘few strains’.

As a result, Rooney watched forlornly from a corporate box at Old Trafford as the Red Devils took a stinging 3-2 defeat that failed them to wrest solo lead in the Premier League.

Rooney hanged out with teammates Darron Gibson, and Jonny Evans and their partners but after that, the England international showed intention of training in earnest again.

Although Rooney and Evans joined the team’s scrimmages (Evans is currently on the injured list), Ferguson was fumed over their performance and told them to report for extra training at Carrington. The other team members were given a day off.

Rooney’s fine was worth his week’s payoff. Gibson and Evans were also fined in the amount of their week’s wages.

But sources said the latest woe at United would have no impact on their campaign as Rooney simply brushed aside the incident.

A confident Rooney on Sunday told his followers on Twitter that his New Year’s resolution is to start the year as champion and finish it as a champion.

Insiders said Rooney is expected to be back with the injury-plagued Red Devils when they travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Rooney, Gibson and Evans were said to have been out only for dinners with their partners but Ferguson would not allow such acts done five days before their next game.

Ferguson was reportedly angry because he wants his players to be in top physical condition at even while in training.

Despite the incident, United will be fresh with confidence in their next fixture as veterans Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs are expected to return to action against the Magpies.

There is also a chance that Chris Smalling would play after a bout with tonsillitis.
