Rooney could be out for Euro 2012 qualifier match

The appearance of Wayne Rooney in the Euro 2012 tiebreaker match in Montenegro is reportedly in doubt.

Out of commission due to a hamstring injury, Rooney had already sat out the Red Devils’ recent match against Stoke.  Team manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave no word as to when Rooney would again be prepared for battle.

‘It’s hard to assess a hamstring injury,’ said Ferguson.  ‘He did a bit of jogging [on Monday] morning but that is all.  We hope we get him back quickly but it is difficult to say.’

The manager also confirmed that the star player will miss the upcoming Champions League match against Basle.

With the Red Devils also going without Chris Smalling (groin injury) and Jonny Evans (ankle injury), Ferguson may be expected to turn to Javier Hernandez for the upcoming match against Norwich this weekend.

For Tuesday’s Group C UEFA qualifying match, Ferguson will pin his hopes on Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck and Dimitar Berbatov.

‘With Hernandez it was straightforward,’ Ferguson told reporters.  ‘It was a dead leg he got and should be ready for next Saturday.  That was an accident, a complete accident.’

Although the Scot insists that Rooney’s injury is not serious, his absence could prove taxing for England manager Fabio Capello, set to form his team after this weekend.

Since the season’s opening, Rooney had scored a total of 9 goals for Manchester United.

Rooney is reportedly one of eight United players that will be out of commission for that match.  Another name joining the injured list is Nemanja Vidic, who is down with a calf injury.

AUTHOR’S OPINION
No one is saying that the 1-1 draw against Stoke was because Rooney wasn’t there. But it does make one wonder. Man United can’t afford to not have Rooney at this crucial stage, but it seems they have no other option. Definitely Man United will still be a force to be reckoned with. But without the talisman, they won’t seem as imposing.
