Ronaldo ‘unhappy’ despite scoring goal

SCORING a goal is often celebrated in a big way especially when somebody like Cristiano Ronaldo does it.

But not this time around though for the Portuguese superstar.

He hit a late goal during Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over third-tier side SD Ponferradina in their first-leg tussle in the King’s Cup (Copa del Rey) on Tuesday but was in no mood to be jolly.

In a rare scene moments after making the brace, Ronaldo neither pumped his fist nor shouted to his heart’s delight. There was no sliding on the pitch either. Instead, he marked the goal with a gloomy look on his face.

Apparently, he is still smarting from their demoralising 1-3 El Clasico setback to arch rivals Barcelona the past weekend. He played on after connecting but not in his usual vibrant style. And when he was substituted, there was a mixture of cheers and hisses from the crowd.

Explaining the player’s attitude towards negative publicity against him, Real sports director Miguel Pardeza said: ‘Cristiano is fine, he is an extraordinary player. If something marks him out from many other players it is that he never gives up on a chance to play, and always gives his all whatever the circumstances.’

Pardeza, a former Real Madrid player, added that no one should doubt Ronaldo’s commitment, personality and abilities as a player.

Madrid, who did not see action in full force, vaulted to the lead after 30 minutes behind a Jose Callejon goal, and after defender Raul Albiol was dismissed in the 70th, Ronaldo showed a brief flash of brilliance for the defending champions’ second goal.

In another match, recently relegated Deportivo Coruna shocked visiting La Liga fourth placers Levante 3-1, while second division side Cordoba surprised local top flight rivals Real Betis 1-0.

Valencia, the 2008 cup winners, drew 1-1 with hosts Cadiz, while struggling Villarreal were also held to the same score at Mirandes. Real Zaragoza and Espanyol both drew their away matches.

Racing Santander stole a 3-2 win at home over Rayo Vallecano after coming back from 1-2 down.

The second legs are scheduled next week.
