Redknapp wants Scholes for Euro 2012

Harry Redknapp thinks that Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes should be part of the Euro 2012 squad for England.

The Tottenham Hotspur boss, currently favoured to take the place of Fabio Capello at the helm of the England national squad, said the 37-year-old can be compared to Barcelona players Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

“You’d love to have Paul Scholes in the Euros,” said Redknapp, who was recently acquitted of tax evasion charges.

“He’d be in your team, he’s that good. He plays like a Spaniard, he can play like Xavi and Iniesta. He doesn’t give the ball away.”

If he returns, it would be Scholes first time back since retiring from international football in 2004 at the age of 29.

He retired from competitive football altogether last summer – only to return to Old Trafford at the request of his long-time manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Englishman currently shows no sign of slowing down – a 90 minute appearance against Liverpool on Saturday’s 2-1 victory proved he can still hang with the best.

Redknapp also commented on the possibility of Tottenham’s Scott Parker or Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard to take over the squad’s captaincy.

“Scotty could do it for sure, so could Steven Gerrard,” he said.

“Scotty is a fantastic boy, he’s a family man, he loves his football, he trains well, he plays well, he gets on with the job, he’s not a minute’s problem.

“He’s not a Billy big-time. He’s just a great boy and that’s what you need in your football club if you’re going to do anything.”

Last Friday, a four-man Football Association panel met to start the process of finding the new manager for the Three Lions with Redknapp being the odds-on favourite to take the spot.

While nothing is decided on, Stuart Pearce was named the interim manager for England’s friendly with Holland on 29 February.
