Redknapp: My thoughts are with Tottenham

HE may be the hottest candidate to replace Fabio Capello as England coach but Harry Redknapp has not shown excitement over the prospect, at least for now.

The Tottenham Hotspur boss said on Thursday he has “not even thought about” taking over the ousted Italian’s post.

Redknapp became the hot favourite to mentor the Three Lions after he was cleared of tax evasion charges on Wednesday.

Capello resigned the same night, after meeting with Football Association chairman David Bernstein over the issue surrounding his backing of John Terry who was stripped of the England captaincy.

Redknapp, “cornered” by reporters as he left his home near Poole, fired back at them when asked about his possible assumption of the national squad job: “I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve got a job to do.”

He was obviously referring to the Spurs’ game on Saturday against visiting Newcastle United and emphasized that his mind was focused on that match.

“They (Football Association) will make whatever decision they want to make,” he said.  “Hopefully, it’ll be the right decision for the country but my focus is all on Tottenham.”

Redknapp added that he, like many others, was also surprised by Capello’s resignation. “I was shocked. I didn’t expect that to happen. We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect that to happen now.”

Under Redknapp, the Spurs are in contention for the Premiership title this season. Since taking charge of the squad mired in the bottom of the league in 2008, he has also led them to a Champions League quarterfinals berth.

“Tottenham have been fantastic to me. They are my only interest,” he added as she spoke from his car.

Redknapp planned not to join the Spurs’ latest training to take a rest following his taxing 13-day trial.

Tottenham management said the club would simply wait to see what develops regarding speculations connecting Redknapp to the England job.
