TOTTENHAM Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes that differences would be settled if the conflicting parties would just sit down and talk.
And this is what he wants to happen between his “confused’’ player Luka Modric and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Modric and Levy had a falling out last summer when the former was told that he would not be sold at any price after Chelsea’s opening bid for 22 million pounds was rejected. Modric was angered by what he learned during the meeting and this impelled him to find a new team to play for.
But Redknapp insisted the Croatian playmaker would stay with Tottenham, believing kinks would be ironed out once Modric and Levy hold talks anew.
Modric did not see action in the Spurs’ 0-3 loss at Manchester United last Monday with Redknapp reasoning Modric’s “head was not right’’ as to why he was excluded from the trip to Old Trafford.
After Chelsea’s earlier bid was turned down, the Blues subsequently raised their offer to 30 million pounds.
Redknapp said Levy made up his mind about releasing Modric since there is no point selling him this late in the transfer window.
The coming meeting, Redknapp added, could put Modric back in his right frame of mind so he could concentrate on playing.
And to erase all doubts hovering all over Modric’s head, Redknapp revealed the Spurs are ready to offer him an improved contract.
Redknapp stressed Levy needs to tell Modric that they want him at Tottenham because he is an important player for them. Redknapp has described the attacking midfielder as a “fantastic person.’’
The Spurs boss also expressed confidence that Modric will be convinced to remain at White Hart Lane because of the squad’s big ambitions this season, among them the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Manchester City and Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid.
Swift and can play with both foot, Modric was voted the Tottenham Hotspur Fan’s Player of the Year in the last 2010-2011 season. He signed a 6-year contract worth 16.5 million pounds for the Spurs in 2008, equalling the club’s record fee set by Darren Bent’s transfer a year earlier.
The Spurs’ home game to open the season against Everton was called off due to the recent riots in London. They ripped Hearts 5-0 in the Europa League before being hammered by the Red Devils.
Chelsea have no immediate plans of appointing a permanent club manager, despite the increasing pressure to hand the position to caretaker Roberto Di Matteo.
