Redknapp fires at ‘disgusting’ crowd chants

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp recently condemned chants from Arsenal supporters directed at Emmanuel Adebayor during the clubs’ match last Sunday.

According to reports, Gunners fans began firing taunts at the striker, mocking the violent gun attack he was involved the past year in Angola.

Addressing the shooting ambush on Togo’s national team bus that left 3 people dead early last year, visiting Arsenal fans began firing chants directed at Adebayor.

‘It should have been you, it should have been you, shot dead in Angola, it should have been you’ screamed the Gunners supporters.

‘It was disgusting,’ Redknapp spat out.  ‘How do you chant something like that at someone?.  You can’t be right mentally.

‘There were kids up there,’ he continued.  ‘What’s that kid going to become?  I dread to think.  I don’t know what you can do especially when they get into a big crowd like that.’

Redknapp furthered to insist that ‘it has no place in football, no place in life.’

Reports indicated that other taunts from Arsenal fans included ‘you should have burned in the riots,’ speaking of the London disorder that started fires and created damage near the Spurs’ White Hart Lane stadium last August.

The Spurs manager, as well as Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger, were also the target of crowd chants.

According to Tottenham, security ejected a number of fans from the stands during the match.

‘It is club policy to ban fans who are found guilty of abusive chanting,’ explained a spokesperson for the home squad.

The taunts resulted in a joint statement from both Tottenham and Arsenal condemning the taunts and revealing that they will be working to pinpoint the individuals guilty of those chants.

‘Both clubs were extremely disappointed to hear the chants from supporters at yesterday’s game,’ read a joint statement found on the Spurs official website.  ‘Neither club tolerates foul language, racist chanting, homophobic chanting or any anti-social behaviour from its supporters.

‘We shall be working closely with each other to identify the individuals involved.’

The statement included a call to action urging individuals to report any witnessed forms of fan discrimination.

‘You do not have to put up with mindless supporters who are intent on ruining your day,’ continued the statement, ‘so use the system, report the individuals and let us take it from there.’

AUTHOR’S OPINION
Chants and insults are part of what makes English football as competitive as it is. But for someone to finally speak out about the foul ones is a relief. Much praise to the joint effort; the question is whether or not people would actually participate in actually reporting those incidents.
