Redknapp eyeing Beckham for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is planning to close in on David Beckham as the midfielder’s contract with LA Galaxy nears expiry.

The move follows an attempt a few months back to acquire the superstar, who trained at White Hart Lane, on a loan from Galaxy.  The LA outfit prevented Beckham from agreeing to the offer.

According to Redknapp, 36-year old Beckham is still in his prime and can still become a massive force in the Premier League.

‘If David wants to come to Tottenham I’d welcome him with open arms,’ said Redknapp.  ‘He’s definitely good enough to play in the Premier League.’

‘His game was never about pace so whether he’s quick or not isn’t an issue,’ he continued.  ‘David’s unique quality is his use of the ball and his ability to pick out a player with a pinpoint pass.’

Redknapp stated that Beckham’s performance while training at White Hart Lane still exhibited skill, talent and an attitude to be emulated by others.

‘He is unbelievable and still an exceptional talent,’ said Redknapp.

‘He’s the best example there is for any young player, how he can look after himself, how he trains and how he’s stayed an ordinary guy despite his extraordinary success.’

For Beckham, moving back to the Premier League assures him of a spot in Team GB come the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Redknapp’s plans of acquiring the midfielder pits him against the Queens Park Rangers, who are also seeking to snatch Beckham as his contract expires November.

However, QPR manager Neil Warnock stated that no talks regarding the matter have yet taken place.

‘It’s not a discussion chairman Tony Fernandes and I have had,’ he said.  ‘Nothing much surprises me at this club but it’s not something we’ve talked about, not myself anyhow.’

‘We can’t sign him anyhow, we can’t sign anybody else now until January so why worry?’

‘I think he is a fabulous professional.  I think he has been a great asset to English football, I like him as a person,’ he continued, ‘but ask me in January.’
