QPR owner: We’ll sign Becks if…

HOPE is not yet lost in Queen’s Park Rangers’ pursuit of David Beckham.

The LA Galaxy star’s contract with the Major League Soccer squad ends in November and there is still a chance that he would eventually end up donning the QPR colours next season.

QPR owner Tony Fernandes has openly expressed his intention to sign Beckham but stressed he would only make an attempt in January if the plan would be in the best interest of the Premier League club.

Fernandez, a Malaysian airline tycoon who took over the West London outfit last August, said he would still evaluate any possible deal to make sure it would be financially feasible for the team.

“I don’t know. Never say never. There is no single policy at QPR, whether it’s David Beckham or Joey Barton or whoever,’’ said Fernandes, when asked about the plan to sign Beckham. “We have to look at each situation and evaluate if it makes good sense to the club.’’

Fernandes added that the key to the club’s success is not just signings but also “delivering a good academy, good scouting system and good training facility.’’

He also emphasized the need for his club to move from Loftus Road before they could sign world-class players. Loftus Road can accommodate a capacity of 18,000 fans.

“You can’t have 150,000-pound-a-week players if you have a stadium like Loftus Road,’’ he said.

In the last few days of the recent transfer window, Fernandes was able to bolster QPR by acquiring Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Anton Ferdinand, Luke Young, Armand Traore and Jason Puncheon.

The controversial Barton, released by Newcastle United after lambasting club officials on Twitter, debuted for QPR as captain on Monday during which they held the visiting Magpies to a 0-0 standoff.

QPR is currently at 11th spot in the league with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw, 2 losses).

AUTHOR’S OPINION
Fernandes still believes in Beckham but can the latter still turn the clock back? Beckham has long been written off by many but who knows, he may yet get reinvigorated once making a comeback to the Premier League. This is a huge gamble for the Malaysian magnate.
