PSG confident of `snatching’ Beckham

IN THE tug-of-war for David Beckham between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, it looks like the edge is on the French side.

An enticement in the form of an 18-month contract worth £11.6 million has been dangled for the veteran midfielder, putting him closer to linking up with PSG.

The 36-year-old Beckham is on top of PSG’s wanted list as he was handpicked by club president Nasser al-Khelaifi to be a vital part of his plan to transform his team into a football powerhouse.

Al-Khelaifi believes they now have the advantage to snare Beckham although he admitted on Thursday that the decision for the move is still between PSG and Tottenham.

The Qatari, one of the owners of PSG, is convinced that Beckham would give his nod to the deal and join the current Ligue 1 leaders by January. Reports said Tottenham won’t be able to match the salary offer to Beckham and that there is no certainty about his playing a major role under Harry Redknapp’s setup.

Beckham’s representatives have already held talks with PSG officials and this apparently would pave the way for a done deal.

The former England captain finished his career with the LA Galaxy after helping them win the Major League Soccer title.

Beckham is highly sought by PSG who deem his presence would raise the team’s profile and that his inspiration would help them lift another French title since 1994.

Earlier, on Wednesday, PSG midfielder Javier Pastore said that a player like Beckham would give young players like him lots of motivation.

The pace of French football is believed to be suited for Beckham’s playing style which PSG could also rely on when they campaign in the Champions League next season.

Prior to seeing action for LA Galaxy, Beckham played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

When Beckham signs, all PSG matches will be broadcast across the Middle East every week.

PSG resume their campaign in Ligue 1 when they face Marseille this weekend. Al Khelaifi, also the general manager of sport for Qatar TV station Al Jazeera, has already given the go-signal for the live telecast of the first PSG game to be shown on the station’s football channel.
