Manchester City publicised their anger towards the Professional Footballers’ Associations’ decision to not charge Carlos Tevez with four weeks’ wages.
Convinced that the PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor would support to the request to fine the forward for breach of contract, the club released an official statement expressing their frustration towards the PFA’s support for Tevez.
City described the situation as a result of a conflict of interest after Gordon’s constant representation of Tevez throughout the entire process.
‘Manchester City is disappointed by the apparent PFA conflict of interest evident in this process,’ read the statement. ‘Carlos Tevez has been personally represented throughout by the PFA chief executive, on whose considerations the club has been informed that the PFA has made its decision.’
The club furthered to suggest that they were led to believe that the deciding body was set to back their request regarding the fine amounting to £800,000.
‘Manchester City has been in constant dialogue with the PFA since Sept 28. Today’s PFA decision is a departure from the club’s understanding of that dialogue.’
With the refusal of the PFA to grant City permission to fine Tevez with a month’s salary, the club revealed that they will be forced to slap the forward with the maximum amount of two weeks’ wages. In Tevez’s case, this would amount to £396,000.
‘Without recourse to the PFA decision available, the maximum two-week fine provided for in standard player contracts will now be applied in relation to the misconduct of Carlos Tevez.’
The PFA’s decision to withdraw support from City came despite Tevez being found guilty by the club’s lawmakers of five separate counts of breach of contract.
Reports indicate that although clubs can lodge an appeal for the PFA to agree to a fine reaching up to six weeks’ wages, the evidence against Tevez was reportedly not sufficient for the body to grant City’s request.
The club approached the PFA with intention to slap Tevez with the fine after the forward allegedly refused to play as a substitute under manager Roberto Mancini’s orders during a recent Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
Also coming out with a statement, the PFA insisted that there was no justification for Tevez to be fined beyond the standard two-week maximum.
‘Our opinion, based on all the evidence presented, is that Carlos Tevez never refused to play for the club,’ read the statement. ‘This is accepted by the club in that the charge against Carlos made at the hearing was not one of refusing to play.
‘As such, the PFA considers there is no justification for a fine other than up to the prescribed sanction of two weeks’ wages agreed by the [Football Association], the Premier League and the PFA.’
The statement added that ‘Carlos will continue to be supported by the PFA in this regard.’
The ruling strips City of any future opportunities to pursue the matter. However reports stated that the club was in fact made to believe that the players’ union, which now supports Tevez, would give City full backing in its attempt to impose the four-week fine.
Additionally, Tevez is allegedly considering filing a lawsuit against Mancini for defamation of character.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: Anyone could understand City’s reaction to the PFA’s decision, especially if they were in fact led to believe they would receive support for their request. However in the scheme of things perhaps City should consider their stellar performance in the Premier League as the top priority. A whiny brat of a player should not take up their time.
