Despite being barely used in the Premier League, Manchester United’s Michael Owen believes he can still make the international team.
The 32-year-old striker still dreams of breaking England’s goal scoring record of 49 which was set by Sir Bobby Charlton.
“I am proud of what I did for England and what I have done. Obviously Sir Bobby’s records are in my sights. I am still here,” Owen said.
Although he hopes for the best, Owen assumed that as long as England keeps Fabio Capello as the manager, he will not have the chance to play international football.
“As soon as Fabio Capello took over, that was it. I was on the bench for his first game in charge after having been an automatic starter for 10 years, and then after that I wasn’t in the squad,” Owen stated.
Owen was a stable fixture for England back when he was playing for Liverpool and Real Madrid. He was also consistently in the starting line-up.
In 89 games he played internationally, he scored a total of 40 goals, making him nine shy of the record set in 1966.
When asked whether he had any idea about Capello’s decision, Owen answered: “I don’t know why, that’s something you have to ask the current manager.”
“Once you make a decision then maybe you’ve made the decision. That’s it, and even if I kept scoring I don’t know what would have happened.”
“You have to accept it. If you get upset and angry to start with, if you will keep getting wound up. You have to let it go and that’s that,” he added.
After losing his place in the squad, Owen’s overall performance showed noticeable signs of decline.
His injuries and lack of first team opportunities have seen him constantly on the bench – as younger attackers such as Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez enjoyed most of the spotlight.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Owen will always be regarded as one of the best attackers in English football and he should still be considered for the squad. He may not break the record by Charlton, but he deserves to be given an opportunity to play.
