Owen: things will change, City will fall

MANCHESTER United’s Michael Owen stepped up to make the brave prediction that Red Devil rivals Manchester City will eventually fall off the top of the Premier League table.

According to the 31-year old striker, although City are currently exhibiting top form that keeps them at first place, a number of factors will come into play and affect their performance later on in the season.

Perhaps City’s most memorable top-level performance this season is their 6-1 mauling of then-leaders Manchester United in Old Trafford.  Since then, Roberto Mancini’s men have constantly maintained a performance that keeps United 5 points at bay at second place.

‘They are at the top of the league, playing great – as well as they’ve performed in years,’ Owen told Mirror Football.

‘They obviously beat us quite well in the league and deserve to win that game,’ he said, recalling the massive home trouncing.  ‘But it was only a few weeks earlier that we played really well and beat them in the Community Shield.’

Owen recalled how at the time of City’s defeat in the Community Shield competition, the general consensus was an agreement that it was too early to expect greatness from the squad.

After addressing how City’s current top form proves the statements wrong, Owen was quick to add that the same changes could take place and alter City’s top form.

‘They’re on a crest of a wave at the minute, but every team will go through a sticky patch at some point, and we’re still early on in the season,’ said Owen.

‘We’ll see what happens after Christmas and start forming opinions then,’ he said.  ‘But there’s no doubt about it, they’re a force to be reckoned with.’

Owen added that as far as United are concerned, there is no need for the former leaders to panic, considering their experience in catching up to other squads as the season comes to a close.

‘Man United over the year s have always gone on great runs towards the end of the season and have pulled it out of the fire many times,’ he said.

As of this writing, Manchester City stand with 31 points at first place after an unbeaten Premier League record of 10 wins and 1 draw.  United are at 26 points after incurring 8 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.

Owen is currently out of commission after a thigh injury sustained during United’s Champions League match against Otelul Galati last month.
