Demba Cisse completed a £10-million transfer to Newcastle United on Tuesday.

The deal was made just before Cisse left for Senegal to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations – where he will join his new teammate Demba Ba to represent their country.

The deal for the 26-year-old striker is reportedly for five and a half years.

“It is an honour to play for such a big club,” he stated. “I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the club.”

Cisse said he plans to repay the opportunity granted him by the team. “I want to pay back the confidence the club have shown in me and give the supporters something to be proud of.”

Cisse was also given the No. 9 shirt which plays a huge importance in the history of the Magpies.

“I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt,” he said.

As excited as the attacker is, Newcastle management are also eager to express enthusiasm with their January signing. “Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play,” said Newcastle boss Alan Pardew. “He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.”

Managing director Derek Llambias also shared his thoughts on Cisse. “We are very pleased to bring Papiss to the club. It is a signing which perfectly complements the type of side Alan is building, and we are sure he will prove to be an excellent acquisition going forward.”

Before the transfer, Cisse played three seasons with the Bundesliga outfit Freiburg. He saw action in 65 games and scored 37 times.
