Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy expressed his admiration towards Fabio Capello’s decision to resign as England manager.
Despite a number of players and managers seeing the Italian’s exit as a good opportunity for an Englishman to take the reins, McCarthy said that Capello’s resignation, which was due to his belief that the FA was wrong to strip Chelsea’s John Terry of his England armband, was admirable.
“The FA had one opinion and Fabio had a different one. If he did walk away, I admire him, on a point of principle,” said McCarthy.
The Wolves boss went on to defend Capello, whom he thought had great courage to abandon a post of such potential.
“He must feel very strongly to walk away from the European Championship finals,” McCarthy noted. “Now they need a replacement and, while I hate going with public opinion, I think Harry [Redknapp] should get it. It’s everyone’s desire.
“If he wants it, he’s the man who deserves it.”
McCarthy lauded Redknapp, currently seen as the ideal replacement for Capello, for his achievement of bringing Tottenham Hotspur to a competitive place in the Premier League despite their horrendous performance during the time of his appointment.
“For when he found Tottenham and where they are now, and for everything he did earlier in his career – if ever there was a man in form and at the top of his game, it’s him.
“With everything he has gone through, he must be as tough as an old boot.”
The widespread support for Redknapp as the new England manager comes at the same time that the Spurs boss was found not guilty of tax evasion charges, for which he stood trial.
At the moment, however, he stands hampered by his responsibilities towards the Spurs.
“Tottenham have been fantastic and it wouldn’t be right to focus on anything other than them,” he told reporters. “I have not thought about England. The FA will make whatever decision they want to make and, hopefully, it will be right for the country.”
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Finally, someone who sees the situation from Capello’s eyes. There’s no shame and all pride for what the Italian did. It takes a strong man to go public with a controversial opinion, but it takes strength plus something else to give up everything for that belief. Give him credit.
