Wolves manager Mick McCarthy recently declared his disinterest towards, and refusal to react to tweets by Queens Park Rangers’ Joey Barton following his fracas with midfielder Karl Henry.
Faced with questions regarding the developments, the manager merely waved off the incident, stating he did not plan on acknowledging the issue.
‘Opinions are like backsides,’ he said. ‘We’ve all got them but it’s not always wise to air them in public.’
Following an on-field confrontation between Barton and Henry during Saturday’s match, the QPR captain further blasted Henry via Twitter, launching verbal assaults ranging from ‘idiot’ to ‘inferior’.
‘I bet u Kelvin [sic] Henry feels like an idiot today. He should just keep his trap firmly shut. #sundayleagueplayer’, read Barton’s tweet.
Afterwards he followed with another message reading ‘Wasn’t happy another player tried to cause an injury when the game nearly over. Just cos he’s inferior in every way #mug’.
Despite the nature of the remarks, McCarthy insisted on not focusing on the matter.
‘You will not get me to start dignifying any of them with a response,’ were his words. ‘With this grey hair comes a bit of wisdom and with age comes a bit more common sense.
‘Unfortunately football does not have enough of it.’
He continued to say that any grievances he has were first directed privately to the individual instead of spreading it to the public.
McCarthy was not spared by Barton, who also stated ‘”Wolves snubbed me” I read in this morning papers hahahahahaha….don’t know what Mick’s been smoking…”’
The manager was quick to dismiss these statements as well.
‘I haven’t read them and I’m not interested,’ he stated. ‘That is why I don’t get involved in it. I’m actually as uninterested in any comments or discussing anyone else as you could find.’
He was however quick to defend Henry.
‘Karl is one of the best professionals I have ever worked with,’ said McCarthy. ‘He has earned himself the right to play in the Premier League through his guts and determination – and has improved a lot.
‘He has never, ever gone out to hurt anybody and, unless Wolves are in the Dog and Duck League, he is not a Sunday morning player.’
In contrast to McCarthy’s nonchalant reaction, Henry had some words regarding Barton’s on-the-pitch behaviour that involved him kicking the treatment room door while walking down the Molineux tunnel after the game.
‘Joey Baron was telling everyone he is on 80-grand a week as usual,’ Henry told Sky Sports news. ‘That is him. He always does that during the game. Always. He riles a few people up when he says those things and tells everybody how great he is.
‘It’s just embarrassing really. If that is what he wants to do, he can carry on doing it but that is why a lot of people dislike him. He has tried to reinvent his image but it is probably the same old story.
I know we had our battle last season. I don’t want to keep going over it. But they were winning the match. There was no need for him to keep going on the way he does.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Massive cheers to McCarthy for class. Top man. Barton’s a child with no sense of accountability. You’re a public figure, chap. Keep post-game comments to yourself, or at least away from the public. Time to grow up.
