For Manchester United, the Carling Cup moves ever closer.
It was Tuesday night when spectators at Ellan Road witnessed the visiting Red Devils blast home team Leeds United out of the grounds with a clean 3-0 victory.
Another highlight for the Red Devils was the stellar performance of reserve Michael Owen, who netted the first and the second goal.
Man United’s trounce began with Owen drawing first blood and finding the back of the net by the 15th minute.
Struggling to equalise, the home team scurried with their own attempts via Robert Snodgrass and Ross McCormack.
Despite Leeds’ valiant efforts, shortly after the crowd would see Owen taking a pass from Mame Diouf. Owen then rocketed a kick that Leeds keeper Andy Lonergan could not stop.
The reserve had tallied his, and the squad’s, second goal by the 32nd minute.
An opportunity to follow with the third goal not long after presented itself as Owen set up reserve Antonio Valencia, had the right-back not struck the ball wide.
It was at the 45th minute when Park Ji-sung found veteran Ryan Giggs, who afterwards launched the ball into the net for United’s third goal.
The second half featured nothing but more United attempts to further pile onto the home squad. Owen attempted a hat-trick more than once, to no avail.
And for the home squad, the second half was a continuous attempt for Leeds to either catch up or prevent the Red Devils from landing any further goals.
The game ended to see Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson heralding Owen’s performance, calling him as ‘one of the best finishers in the business.’
‘Michael is still fantastic when it comes to putting the ball in the net,’ said an ecstatic Ferguson. ‘I’m very pleased for him that he’s got another couple tonight.’
‘Because of the form of the other strikers we have here, Michael is not getting the amount of game he deserves right now,’ mused Ferguson, ‘and that is unfortunate for him.’
Owen admitted that although his first goal attempt was weak but successful, ‘that second one was every bit as sweet as I can hit them.’
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Honestly, there was very little doubt about the outcome of this match. Neither is there any doubt of what Owen could contribute. Give him more minutes, and he’ll help push United further than they’ve already gone.
