Representatives from Liverpool last night insisted that they have not put striker Andy Carroll up for a £10-million Newcastle bid.
The comments addressed widespread rumours suggesting that Carroll, who moved from Newcastle to Liverpool last season, is being offered a way back to the Toon after underperforming at Merseyside.
Supporting the club’s denial, Newcastle also stated that there had been no contact regarding Carroll, who had only netted six goals since moving to Anfield a year ago.
According to certain reports, word of the 23-year old’s possible transfer began when a top Liverpool agent rang Newcastle offering to sell the striker for £20 million. The Tyneside club reportedly rejected the offer, along with the following £15 million downgrade.
However, they were reportedly willing to offer £10 million – less than half of Carroll’s £35 million purchase price that made him the most expensive British player in history.
‘Andy’s a Geordie boy and it would be great to bring him home,’ a Newcastle source told The Sun. ‘But while he left on his terms he’d have to come back on ours.’
Carroll’s transfer to Liverpool had him pegged to be a partner of then fellow newcomer Luis Suarez as a response to Fernando Torres’ £50 million exit to Chelsea.
Although Suarez has shown considerable contribution, Carroll has so far been lukewarm and inconsistent, and for a time spent a consistent number of matches on the bench.
At the moment, however, Carroll’s presence in Liverpool comes to a crucial phase, as Luis Suarez serves his 8-match ban.
The striker allegedly suggested that his underperformance was mainly due to a lack in Liverpool’s efforts to help him play to his strengths. Although known for his headers, Carroll’s goals at Anfield have also been showing his deadly left foot – a possible asset that some have pointed out has not been exploited.
Other rumours suggest that his frustration over the situation has led to more than a few bust-ups with Reds manager Kenny Dalglish.
Liverpool are set for series of big battles, including an upcoming two-leg Carling Cup clash with Manchester City, followed immediately by an FA Cup match with Manchester United.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Such a development might just signal the end of Liverpool. Although the Merseyside club are in a frustrating slump, Carroll is still poised to provide a significant addition to a potentially powerful squad that perhaps only need a change of strategy.
