Liverpool lash out at FA, call for Evra charge

FOLLOWING the FA’s decision to hand Luis Suarez an 8-match ban for allegedly making racist remarks, Liverpool immediately accused the ruling body of having had a verdict even before the hearing.

The statement was in reaction to both the suspension, and the £40,000 fine that Suarez was also handed for supposedly throwing racist remarks at Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

‘It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November,’ said the statement.

‘Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.’

Additionally, the club went on to brand Evra’s testimony as lacking credibility, citing a previous case of unproven accusation of racism that the United player brought against a Chelsea groundskeeper.

‘It is our opinion that the accusation by this particular player (Evra) was not credible – certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.’

The club then brought forward their demand to see action against Evra, who had also admitted to throwing insults at Suarez in Spanish.

‘We would also like to know when the FA intend to charge Patrice Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent, after he admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms.

‘Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.’

As it currently stands, the ban will be suspended for a certain period until the FA receive word of the outcome of any appeal that Liverpool might make within 14 days.  The time frame potentially puts a number of crucial matches in jeopardy.

One of these is the following leg of the Carling Cup semi-final set for January 25 against current Premier League leaders Manchester City.
