The 2011-2012 Premier League season has come to a screeching halt for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva due to a knee injury sustained earlier this week.
A damaged left knee ligament was the result of Leiva’s attempted challenge on Juan Mata during the Reds’ 2-0 Carling Cup quarter-finals win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Tuesday. The injury will result in Leiva being sidelined for the rest of the season – a result that he and the club had been fearing.
The 24-year old publicly confirmed his situation by responding to a long list of Twitter well-wishers with the message ‘Just to confirm that I will be out until the rest of the season.’
Leiva continued, promising that he will return a greater force than he had been before the accident.
‘I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch. I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dream with the LFC shirt.
‘I am sure I’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.’
The Brazilian’s absence for the rest of the season will also come as a massive blow for Liverpool, who have benefitted greatly from Leiva’s impressive performance, particularly against the two most recent clashes against Chelsea, as well as the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
An official club statement revealed that Leiva is scheduled for surgery.
‘The Brazilian international will undergo surgery (on an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament) and unfortunately be ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign.’
At the moment, Liverpool are also limping from the unavailability of team captain Steven Gerrard, who after months of treatment and recuperation over a groin injury has now been taken down by a problematic ankle.
As of today, there is no word on when the skipper will return to action.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Leiva out of commission for the rest of the season? No one can say how much that could affect Liverpool. The Reds seem to be continually tested on their survival rate despite the absence of crucial players. They’ve been doing well so far without Gerrard, here’s hoping they can come back despite Leiva’s absence.
