Lindegaard injury worsens United problems

Manchester United face crisis as their number 1 goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has been ruled out for at least four weeks due to an ankle injury he suffered on Monday.

The injury caused ligament damage which will require extensive treatment. With it, the Red Devils have to rely on David De Gea in the crucial stages of the season.

The Danish international will miss United’s Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Sunday, Liverpool next Saturday at Old Trafford and Norwich City on the 26 February.

Now, even the 4 March encounter against Tottenham could be in question for Lindegaard.

De Gea has been less than spectacular during the past games but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has no choice but to use the 21-year-old former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper.

The substitute goalkeeper is said not to be free of injury, with reports saying he suffered a knock during training but should be fit enough to play against the Blues.

The Spanish goalkeeper’s shaky performances in between the posts during their FA Cup defeat against Liverpool would easily make Ferguson look for the bench for better alternatives. But as there is no one suited, he cannot take De Gea out of the firing line just yet.

The inexperienced Ben Amos is available, but highly doubtful to have the full confidence of the United manager. He’s only had seven appearances in five seasons at Old Trafford.

Amos still believes he can make a difference and win the boss’ affection.

“I have been waiting a long time for an opportunity this season and thankfully it came,” he said.

“I feel I am ready to play at this level and it has been kind of frustrating that these chances don’t come around. But you have to be ready when something like that happens and you are thrown straight in and I like to think I made the most of it.”

“All I can do is go out and do the best I can, and put pressure on the other goalkeepers in training and try and get a chance in the games. But it’s the manager’s decision at the end of the day.”
