Lescott says Spurs not a threat

Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott recently stated that third-placers Tottenham Hotspur are in no way a threat in the race for the Premier League title.

The defender revealed that his team, who are set to face the Spurs this Sunday, aren’t haunted by notions of Tottenham overtaking them in the league table, despite the narrow five-point difference.

According to Lescott, the team they consider their rivals for the title are Manchester United, who trail City by three points and lead the Spurs by two.

“No disrespect to Spurs but we see Man United as our main rivals, because they’re second in the league,” Lescott said.

“We need to focus on the next team behind us, and at this moment in time that’s United.

“As much as the points [on Sunday] are vital to create a gap between us and Spurs, it’s more important to pull away from Man United.”

Although the Red Devils stand merely an arm’s reach away from City, a win against Tottenham this weekend would allow the leaders to pull away even farther.  However, a Spurs victory would rocket Tottenham to second place, one point clear of United, and merely two points behind City.

“Maybe the neutrals want Spurs to win the title rather than us or United, but we’re not getting involved in any of that,” said Lescott.  “We’re just here to do a job and hopefully win the league.”

The match, set at Etihad Stadium, will see City facing Tottenham after demolishing them 5-1 at White Hart Lane in August last year.

“It seems ages ago that we won 5-1 there,” Lescott said.  “We don’t need to look back on that performance, we’re confident anyway.

“Spurs are playing well, but we know we’ve done well this season, especially at home.  They will come with a game-plan and we know it’ll be a tough test.”

On the other side of the fence, Spurs midfielder Luka Modric faced the press to state that producing an upset come Sunday is not impossible.

Although the Spurs will visit City’s home stadium where their opponents hold a 100% record, Modric is confident that they can pull off a win.

“The last two seasons we have played massive games there and this will be another one,” he said.  “I hope we do well and maybe win, why not?  We are going there with a positive mindset and we will try to win the game.

“We try to do that against every opponent.  I think we are good that we can go there and win them.”

The Spurs are currently coming away from a 1-1 draw with the Wolves, robbing them of two points that could have put them level with Manchester United.  Despite this setback, Modric insisted that they plan to stay consistent and produce a win at the Etihad Stadium.

“It can happen,” he said.  “No-one expected us to draw but that’s why every game in this league is hard.  It’s not the end of the world.  We just need to pick ourselves up for the big game on Sunday and we have to be positive regardless of Saturday’s result.”
