LIVERPOOL’s Dirk Kuyt recently attested that striker Craig Bellamy is set to help the club become a force to be reckoned with as they face Manchester United this weekend.
Although the main focus of the match would be Luis Suarez’s first visit to Old Trafford since being suspended for racially abusing Red Devils defender Patrice Evra, Kuyt commented that Bellamy’s performance as of late makes him possibly the most dangerous man on their team.
“Craig has been unbelievable,” said the winger, as reported by MirrorFootball.com. “He looks even better now than he did the first time he was here – it’s not very often you can say that about someone who spends two spells at a club.”
Bellamy, 32, was awarded as Liverpool’s best player 2 months in a row. His contribution to the Reds’ scoring has been evident in his seven goals in 13 matches.
“Usually, the first time is better, but this time, with Craig in better shape, he knows exactly what he can do and he’s really professional in training every day, not just helping himself, but the whole of the squad,” said Kuyt.
Over the past few months perhaps Bellamy’s most notable goals would include the late goal that won Liverpool their Carling Cup match against Manchester City, and sent them to the finals, set at Wembley, for the first time in 16 years.
When asked about his rising performance in the squad, Bellamy noted that his main goal is to help secure a victory, goals or no goals.
“I’ve always had the view that a goal is a bonus for me,” he was quoted. “They don’t alter how I go about my game.
“The aim for me is to try and win and to try and play as big a part as I can in the game. And if I’m able to score or create one, it’s a bonus.
“If goals come, great, but winning games is more important for me.”
When asked about Liverpool’s potential for the season’s remainder, Bellamy was optimistic that they could end it on a high note.
“It’s been a tough month for us but fortunately we’ve come through it and going into February we’re in good shape,” he said.
“We had eight games in the space of three or four weeks and the squad’s been tested.
“Reaching the [Carling Cup] final and getting to Wembley was big for us because going into January we knew the amount of games we had against opposition like Manchester City three times and Manchester United in the FA Cup.
“We’ve got a chance to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals if we beat Brighton, we’re in the final of the League Cup, we’re four points off fourth and have a fully fit squad.
“We have a good chance to up the charge and end the season on a real positive note.”
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Bellamy could be Liverpool’s dark horse, and he could be one of those men who come from behind and give opponents a complete runaround. Cheers for the award, and we’re expecting to see more from him. Man United are in for a challenge this weekend!
