Jack Wilshere out for 3 weeks on injury relapse

The hits just keep on coming, and Arsenal are out of counterpunches.

After being battered by a string of misfortunes, Arsenal faces the newest blow as midfielder Jack Wilshere has reportedly been ruled out for three weeks due to persistent ankle troubles.

The 19-year old suffered a relapse Monday during a training session, and was effectively ruled out of the upcoming Premier League match against Manchester United set for this Sunday.

The relapse also pulls him out of other matches including those with Wales and Bulgaria.

‘He had a setback,’ explained Wenger. ‘It’s a hotspot on the bone of his ankle that if you continue to play can lead to a stress fracture. So we had to stop him.’

The discomfort plagued Wilshere despite having already removed a protective boot, and eyeing the chance to travel to Italy to face Udinese for the second leg of the Champions League qualifier.

Wilshere was said to have sustained the first painful spells last June, but the discomfort subsided over the break, only to return during the club’s Asian tour. And after two tests late last week, the pain returned Monday.

Wilshere’s ankle problems had begun plaguing him since last season’s Euro 2012 qualifying match between England and Switzerland. The midfielder ran the risk of sustaining serious injuries and therefore had to be withdrawn from competing in the European U-21 competition.

Wenger assumed that the relapse was the cause of overwork, as Wilshere was forced to play despite being in the red for lack of other options.
‘There is no chance he will be fit for England,’ Wenger said. ‘He is in a boot now.’

Wilshere’s absence puts a deeper dent into the club’s midfield, especially after the departure of Cesc Fabregas and, as of recently, Samir Nasri.
Arsenal currently holds a 1-0 aggregate lead over Udinese.
