Positive results in his medical exam have placed Owen Hargreaves one step farther towards finally sealing a deal with Manchester City.
The 30-year old midfielder was released by bitter City rivals Manchester United after four years plagued with Hargreaves’ injuries stemming from a chronic tendinitis problem.
While still with Manchester United, his condition was addressed with surgery on both knees, with his surgeon commenting on his joints as the worst he had seen in 35 years.
Hargreaves’ health problems have severely limited his activities, clocking in no more than six minutes of first-team play in nearly three years.
According to City officials, however, the medical tests assure that Hargreaves is set to rocket himself back up to top-flight status despite his abhorrent physical track record.
‘Owen is an experienced player,’ said City centre-back Joleon Lescott. ‘He has played in the Champions League is an international. It is only going to be good for the City squad if he signs.’
Previous to his health problems, Hargreaves saw his first season at Manchester United capped off with a victory both in the Premier League, and in the Champions League.
Afterwards, he was recognized as one of the top players in the English national team during the 2006 World Cup.
‘I’ve worked with Owen in England level and he is a great professional,’ Lescott continued.
Addressing the notion that signing Hargreaves is a risky gamble, Lescott assuredly stated that ‘the club know what they are doing; Owen knows what he is doing.’
He added that the City medical team is fully equipped to get Hargreaves back in top form.
‘If we can get him fit, I’m sure it won’t be very long before he is back to his best,’ he said. ‘He will be a player with a point to prove after his injuries.’
Hargreaves’ signing was also received positively by City goalkeeper Joe Hart.
‘Wowzers!’, he reportedly exclaimed upon being told of the transfer. ‘Where’s that come from? I don’t know what to make of that. You’ve put me on my toes. It could be a major signing. You can tell how important he is.
‘I’ve never been involved with him but I saw a lot of him when he was at Bayern Munich, and then Manchester United,’ he continued. ‘He’s a huge player.’
Experts estimate an official signing to take place after about 2 days.
