Gunner fans plan trash-bag protest

Frustrated Arsenal fans are reportedly urging other supporters to place black bin liners over the empty seats at the next game at the Emirates Stadium to emphasise the shrinking attendance during the Gunners’ home matches.

A report by MirrorFootball.com revealed that the idea, concocted by an unnamed group of Arsenal supporters, is planning to see the demonstration take place Saturday as the Gunners meet the Blackburn rovers.

The plan comes as yet another blow to Arsenal’s already faltering popularity, with manager Arsene Wenger receiving most of the backlash.

With the Gunners’ performance sending them crashing to seventh place in the Premier League table, fans have turned rabid and support for the black bin protest has gathered steam and support on social media platforms.

“The reason for the black bin bags?  Time to take out the trash…#blackbinbagprotest” read a message on Twitter.

Another poster fired at Wenger over his decision to allow for the exit of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas months ago.

“Wenger – you can’t call yourself a big club if you sell your best players (Cesc & Nasri) #blackbinbagprotest,” the supporter said.

Some fans however have voiced their opposition towards the idea.

“this #blackbinbagprotest will make us a laughing stock.  please don’t do it people. Everyone’s frustrated but this wont help us,” one fan urged.

Another supporter aimed his ire at the ones in favour of the demonstration.

“Put your support in the bin bags while you’re at it, you’re the rubbish we need out. #blackbinprotest #fakefansinthebin”

Arsenal’s seemingly faltering form in the EPL has drawn doubts even from actual Gunners fan clubs, including Where Has Our Arsenal Gone and Black Scarf Movement.

According to Kelvin Meadows, a member of both clubs, although they still have full support for the club, they are questioning its current direction.

One of his major concerns, along with most of the angry supporters’, is the club’s apparent refusal to purchase new players to reinvigorate the squad.

“What was the point in six per cent price rises last summer of the club do not want to spend?” said Meadows.  “We will always support the team and Wenger deserves respect and to be treated with dignity after everything he’s done for the club.

“If Robin van Persie signs [a new contract], then great,” he said.  “But I don’t know many people who would want to blame him if he did go in the summer because is the club going to buy players to rebuild the team again?

“It’s not the players’ fault.  It’s not even their fault if some of them are not necessarily good enough.  But we would like answers from the board.”
