Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola recently told the press that, just like any other squad, his team could very well be defeated.
The statement came after Barca’s 5-0 bludgeoning of visitors Atletico Madrid Saturday night at Camp Nou. The victory notably came a total of 7 days after Barca trounced Osasuna 8-0 at home.
‘We are not unbeatable,’ said Guardiola. ‘Any team can beat us.’
The Barca coach furthered, saying that priority still rests on the squad playing a good game, which is what the fans come to the stadium to watch.
Barca’s win came as a much-needed relief after a sub-par performance on the road that resulted in two consecutive draws – incidentally both with the same 2-2 score.
Another 2-2 draw also resulted from Barcelona’s home game against AC Milan for the UEFA Champions league opener.
According to Guardiola, the Atletico Madrid game proved the importance of concentration, and suggested that in order to gather more wins ‘we have to do it again.’
The squad’s first home game since their road tour was highlighted by a hat-trick from star Lionel Messi.
‘Messi was defensive again, you can only congratulate him,’ Guardiola beamed. ‘He’s a player that you don’t have to explain, you just have to watch him in action.’
Guardiola’s squad are set to face BATE Borisov for a group match for the Champions League
For Barcelona supporters, the challenge is in fact for the Catalans to claim their fourth Primera Liga win after having ended first in the league tables three years in a row.
Secondary to that is for them to successfully keep bitter rivals Real Madrid at bay.
Guardiola’s squad are next set for a Champions League group match against BATE Borisov next Wednesday at 6:45 PM UTC.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
There’s little doubt about Barcelona’s capability for defeat, especially from their performance this season. And it seems that a sure-fire way to at least prevent them from losing is by facing them out of Camp Nou. Good news for all the other Primera Liga players, perhaps some equality will finally emerge within the league.
