Bundesliga club Hamburg are now officially under the coaching of former Basel club Thorsten Fink, who signed a contract that expires in 2014. Fink will be set to replace Michael Oenning who was let go a few weeks ago.
A former midfielder from Bayern Munich, Fink is faced with the challenge of breathing life to a club currently at 18th place in the Bundesliga table. The Rothosen are also reeling from a horrid Bundesliga performance, carrying only a single win from their first eight matches since the season began.
‘There hasn’t been any consistency tactically speaking [from Basel] for the entire season,’ observed Niklas Wildhagen, a correspondent for Bundesligafanatic.com.
‘Implementing a system the players can rally around will ultimately foster stability and help improve results, which will in turn [instil] confidence in these young players.’
Wilhagen continued to say that Fink may possess the abilities needed to reenergise the currently-heaving squad.
‘Fink needs to get them playing to their strengths and he seem s a perfect fit for HSV in this respect,’ he said. ‘He seems to be a coach who has a clear-cut vision. He is potentially another young and exciting coach that could shake up the league.’
Threatened early on with their drop zone position, Hamburg are attempting to sustain a history of being the only club that has so far avoided relegation in Bundesliga.
Fink history, however, brings promise to the club after leading Basel to numerous Super League titles and putting up a challenging match against Premier League giants Manchester United with a 3-3 draw in last month’s Champions League competition.
The new coach is expected to begin his duties after Hamburg’s Bundesliga match with Freiburg, during which sporting director Frank Arnesen will perform his last duties as caretaker.
Arnesen stated that upon looking for a replacement for Oenning, Fink was at the top of the options list.
‘Thorsten Fink was the coach I wanted,’ Arnesen told reporters. ‘He fits in with HSV and with our philosophy. He will improve the team and develop us further.’
Fink’s coaching career features gleaming accolades for his former team Basel, which under his coaching won the Swiss cup in the 2009-10 season, as well as the Swiss Super League for two consecutive season from 2009-2011.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: Basel are in desperate need of an overhaul. Their performance this season has crossed the border between upsetting and embarrassing. The first step in doing so is to convince the players to play to their strengths and get back into competitive mode. Perhaps Fink could be the man to succeed in what seems to be an incredibly difficult challenge.
