Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez should be axed from Liverpool after his latest controversy during their tie at Old Trafford last Saturday when he denied the Patrice Evra’s pre-game hand shake.
Ferguson went further to blame Suarez of tainting the club’s reputation and history.
When asked about the snub, Ferguson simply said: “I couldn’t believe it. I just couldn’t believe it.
“I had a chat with Patrice this morning and he said, ‘I’m going to shake his hand — I have nothing to be ashamed of, I want to keep my dignity’ and then Suarez refuses.
“He’s a disgrace to Liverpool Football Club. Some players should not be allowed to play for Liverpool again.
“With the history that club’s got and in a situation like today, he could have caused a riot.
“I was really disappointed in that guy. That was terrible what he did.
“It created a tension — the referee didn’t know what to do about it, it caught him off guard.
“It was a terrible start to the game and a terrible atmosphere it created.”
Evra was clearly disappointed with the gesture of Suarez that he reacted by grabbing the striker’s arm in an attempt to force a handshake.
Suarez was unfazed and went on to shake the hands of other players – eventually running to Rio Ferdinand who, in turn, snubbed the offer of the controversial striker.
Tension caused by the snub heightened when the teams met in the tunnel during halftime, where a bust-up exploded between the two rivals. According to reports, there were spitting incidents and shoving as Evra tried to confront Suarez.
The chaos had to be broken up by stewards to avoid escalating into a full-blown brawl.
“After seeing what I saw I decided not to shake his hand,” said Ferdinand, who was seen refusing Suarez’s handshake after Evra was snubbed.
“He’s not got the respect that he needs to have in these situations and acknowledge he’s made a mistake and say sorry. I lost all respect for the guy after that.
“It could have been resolved today, maybe, between the two people who are involved.
“After this, it’s not great. It’s disappointing. I expected more from the other guy but it wasn’t to be.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Suarez seems to love the spotlight put on him – regardless if it’s negativity or otherwise. A simple gesture may have diffused the situation and he may have been forgiven but there is no turning back this time. Even his own team have expressed disappointment. Too little too late for him.
