Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently addressed some of Europe’s biggest clubs zeroing in on star player Nani, with the manager declaring that he will not let go of his player at any price.
Reports indicate that the contract of the Portuguese player, who rocketed from a hobbling newcomer to a star player, is set to expire by 2014. This has consequently sent clubs including Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan sniffing around for a possibility to nab the player.
Furthermore, the 24-year old is said to be currently within the periphery of Real Madrid, who had successfully acquired Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009.
Warding off the wooers, Fergie stated that Nani is a key player in the Red Devils lineup and along with Wayne Rooney is one of the most crucial parts of his arsenal.
In an effort to further secure Nani’s ties with the club, Manchester United are reportedly gearing to hand the player a massive pay hike from his weekly £90,000 to £130,000.
The player’s evolution as part of the Red Devils gained legitimacy last season when his teammates deemed him as the club’s player of the year. Despite his tendencies for theatrics, he is currently seen as one of the most influential and pivotal members of Fergie’s army.
The growing clamour for Nani, however, presents a number of new challenges and requirements, mostly on Ferguson’s part.
Aside from having to cash out in order to tie down the star player, there is the need for Ferguson to blatantly identify Nani as a major player in his future plans for United.
Based on United’s usual procedure, management begins to give room for possible negotiations if a player’s contract is set to expire in 18 months to 2 years. Under normal circumstances this procedure would see Fergie open up to talks for Nani by March next year.
Nani transferred to Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 for around £20 million.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Nani and Rooney add a bit of glamour into United’s games. Fergie should be aware (as it seems he is) that despite Nani’s tendencies for stupid acts, his ability to pull in the crowd is enough for United to nail him down as hard and for as long as they can.
