Reflecting a recent comment by Liverpool star Luis Suarez, an online poll revealed that readers do not believe that the Reds would be able to claim the Premier League title this season.
The survey, conducted by Skysports.com, 65.9% of the respondents agreed with Suarez’s statements about the Premier League being out of Liverpool’s reach.
Furthermore, odds currently place a Liverpool Premier League win for this season at 20/1 (from 28/1) after consecutive wins after facing Wolverhampton and Everton.
The odds had read 10/1 before the Reds sustained back-to-back defeats in the hands of Stoke and Tottenham.
An earlier poll based on Sir Alex Ferguson’s statement that one of 6 particular teams could win the title showed 39% of respondents picking Man United as eventual champions.
Liverpool came second with 21.3% of votes; Manchester City is third, followed by Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Another archived survey saw fans pegging Liverpool as the most likely team to beat Manchester United in the race to the Premier League title.
The more recent consensus on Liverpool being out of the title race fell parallel with Suarez’s statements describing winning the Premier League championship as something that has become increasingly hard.
According to Suarez, the main reason would be the two Manchester giants currently ruling the Premier League table. Describing the squads as ‘unreachable,’ Suarez insisted that it would be better for the Reds to instead target silverware.
Liverpool’s performance has been greatly affected by Suarez’ entry, with the Uruguayan netting 5 goals in 9 matches overall.
The striker has given special mention to manager Kenny Dalglish, who according to him has gone to extra lengths to help him feel more comfortable at the club.
‘I am liking the Premier League more than I could imagine,’ said Suarez, who transferred from Dutch team Ajax.
‘Dalglish tries to talk to me in Spanish and tries to help me,’ he revealed. ‘I appreciate that.’
Suarez and the rest of Liverpool are set to meet current table rulers Manchester United on October 15.
