Stewart Downing recently told reporters that Liverpool are on their way to dominate and dispose of the great English Premier League teams – starting with Manchester United as the first target.
Recently signed from Aston Villa, the £20 million midfielder said he would like to see his new squad ‘entertain’ and ‘kill off’ the 19-time league champs set to visit Anfield next week.
‘I cannot wait to get one at the Kop end,’ he said. ‘Maybe that will happen against Man United – that would be perfect.’
Downing said that the Reds have been increasingly threatening in their attempts to overcome opponents, and that they are slowly approaching an opportunity to ‘put all of them away.’
‘We need to be more clinical and kill teams off,’ Downing told reporters. ‘The game against the Wolves was a good example. We made it a harder day than it needed to be because we should have scored a few more times.’
The midfielder continued, saying that regardless of the team’s performance, an undeniable development came in the form of supporters finding entertainment in watching their home team play.
‘Some managers obviously don’t want a game to be too open,’ Downing said. ‘But from a fan’s point of view, players are there to entertain and do well. I think, particularly at home so far, we’ve done that.’
Following two consecutive defeats in the Premier League, the Reds rallied back to return to winning ways with a 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton, and afterwards a 0-2 derby win against hosts Everton.
Downing described how the Reds managed to pull back up despite the 2-game losing streak, and it is that reason that helped keep Liverpool a significant force.
‘It is easy to slip away from the pack when you lose a couple and we didn’t want to do that,’ Downing said. ‘I think the two victories keep us [in the pack] going into the international break.’
He added that keeping their form would require remaining a competitive team and avoiding detrimental slip-ups as much as possible.
‘We need it to stay in the pack,’ he urged. ‘We’re going into the break in good form and we have to ensure we keep it going.’
Liverpool and Manchester United have taken an equal 5 games apiece in their last 10 meetings. A win for the Reds would give them their second straight victory against the league leaders.
It would also mean their fourth straight win hosting Manchester United in Anfield.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
It seems someone is a bit overexcited. While Liverpool have done a top job staying competitive, ‘putting them all away,’ is a bit of a stretch. But with Suarez and Gerrard as ammunition, climbing higher in the table is a possibility. League dominance, however, is perhaps a few more seasons away. Liverpool are not yet at that calibre.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
