MANCHESTER United keeper David De Gea recently declared that despite falling off their usually-lethal form, the Red Devils can still come back to win the Premier League title.
Currently trailing archrivals and table leaders Manchester City, United are at second place despite winning their last 4 domestic matches.
The rivalry between the two Manchester teams is currently surging more than ever as City knocked United off the top of the table, after giving them a 6-1 mauling at Old Trafford last month.
According to the Daily Star, this has made City the strong favourites to claim the Premier League title at season’s end.
A defiant De Gea however dismissed this fact, warning that the end of the season is still a long way away, and there is still time for United to get back to the top spot.
‘We can still win the title,’ De Gea stated. ‘United can still win it all. It’s still not decided that City will finish first.’
The 21-year old, who joined United over the summer from Atletico Madrid, has been attempting to prove himself a worthy addition to the league giants.
Additional pressure for the young keeper came with the fact that all eyes were on him to replace veteran Edwin van der Saar, who retired as the previous season closed.
De Gea, however, was generous in recognising Red Devils coach Sir Alex Ferguson as a key contributor to his impressive performance with Manchester United.
‘What I have learned since the summer in England is more than most of my professional career in Spain,’ he said. ‘It is another world in all of the concepts.
‘[Alex Ferguson] is an incredible coach and without doubt the best in the world.’
The Red Devils’ last match, where they faced Sunderland to take a 1-0 win, saw De Gea on the bench, which the keeper described as Ferguson’s choice.
‘I didn’t play the past weekend but Ferguson told me it was just so I could rest,’ he explained.
As of this season with the Red Devils, De Gea has played in 9 games and tallied a total of 45 saves with 3 clean sheets.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
OPINION: No one can argue with De Gea’s point. The season is indeed far from ending, and five points is not too big of a hurdle for United. But whatever faith there was before about the Red Devils overcoming any obstacle has slightly withered. City are a powerful team and they will not give up the top spot that easily.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
