Liverpool claimed a 3-1 victory against Exeter Wednesday night in the Carling Cup second round, giving Kenny Dalglish his 200th win as Reds manager.

The night was highlighted by an explosive Luis Suarez who scored 1 and tied up the other 2, sealing the win for Liverpool at the St. James’ Park.

Suarez shot the first goal of the game at the 23rd minute, and afterwards set up for Maxi Rodriguez to launch another by the 55th. The Uruguayan helped seal the deal for Liverpool in the 58th minute, as he again teed up, this time for Andy Carroll.

Despite Liverpool’s solid performance, some concern was raised early in the first half when the Reds’ Raul Meireles went down due to a collar bone injury, which may put the midfielder out of commission for two to three weeks.

The game closed with a late penalty goal by Exeter Daniel Nardiello during the 80th minute.

The victory was a welcome result also for Dalglish’s current efforts to strengthen his refurbished midfield, which includes new signing Charlie Adam.

‘I think you’ve seen with the players out there tonight that we’ve come here to do a job and we’ve don that,’ said Adam after the game. ‘It’s going to be a difficult game coming down here but we’ve shown the right respect to Exeter, a good side, but done the job and that’s important to us.’

As for Dalglish, the win could not have shown better evidence of his new team pushing forward to become a solid squad, despite the absence of captain Steven Gerrard.

‘The longer they play together and train together the better they’ll get,’ said Dalglish.

The victory rockets the Reds to the third round of the Carling Cup, set to begin on September 19.

Other squads set for the third round include the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Birmingham City, Manchester United, Manchester City, Stoke City, and Tottenham Hotspur.
