FOR Corinthians president Andres Sanches, suspended Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is not worth 40 million pounds anymore, but they are still hoping to sign him up.
Sanchez on Tuesday confirmed that he will try to snare Tevez in January but for less than the said price offered in the summer.
The Brazilian side failed in their bid to sign Tevez last August because they did not agree with City over the structure of payments. They could not also provide bank guarantees to make the Eastlands side agree with the terms.
But Sanches gained confidence that they could eventually land Tevez with the prospect of a lucrative new television deal being paid in January.
Sanches said they will be ready by then to make a new offer and he is hoping the breakdown in relations between Tevez and Mancheter City manager Roberto Mancini could also pave the way for them to realise their dream of having the striker on their roster.
City had earlier accepted that they will have to settle for a much lower fee but they will demand a sell-on clause if they opt to cash in.
“Tevez is not worth 40 million pounds. We will make an offer well below it,’’ said Sanches, whose Sao Paolo-based outfit is the richest in Brazil in terms of revenue.
Sanches added Tevez is a player who interests them but they will only know by January if they have a chance.
He added that the written offer of 40 million pounds is not worth anything now. “After all the problems, he should be worth less. What if he brings the problems here?’’
Tevez had a falling out with Mancini recently after he refused to play as a substitute in their defeat at Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage.
After the incident Mancini said Tevez is “finished’’ with City.
The Argentine, who denied refusing to play and said it was just a case of misunderstanding, was alpped with a two-week ban by City as disciplinary sanction.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Tevez must consider the Corinthians move seriously. With his expensive tag price, there may not be any other teams interested in him. Only problem for Sanches’ team is if Tevez courts trouble again once he dons the Brazilian squad’s colours.
Luis Suarez confirmed that he still dreams of one day playing in Spain, but reminds everyone that he’s still happy to play with Liverpool for the time being.
