ONE draw and four losses were simply too much a setback for Inter Milan to endure.
And Gian Piero Gasperini knew his fate would depend on it.
Then the sad news came. Gasperini was fired as Inter coach on Wednesday after being in charge in only five competitive fixtures.
“I’m very disappointed,’’ Gasperini told reporters at Inter’s training ground. “At the end of the day, the results have determined everything.’’
The new manager touted to call the shots at Inter is Claudio Ranieri. The former Chelsea, Juventus and AS Roma coach has been reported in Italian media to be involved in talks with Inter and that he would oversee their next training session. But Inter have yet to make any confirmation.
Inter bosses decided to give the 53-year-old Gasperini the walking papers after the squad’s humiliating 3-1 loss at Novara, a promoted side who were beaten in their first two Serie A outings this season.
Inter, the 2010 European champions, thanked Gasperini on their website “for the effort he showed in developing the role.’’ The club also expressed regret “at the interruption of the working relationship.’’
Gasperini said it was a shame he was relieved, claiming he had already established a good rapport with the team. “There’s much regret around,’’ he said.
Inter’s latest training was supervised by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi.
Since Jose Mourinho’s departure following the 2009-2010 treble-winning season, Gasperini is the third coach to leave Inter after Rafael Benitez and Leonardo.
Inter’s run of five scudettos in a row was ended by neighbours AC Milan last year. They were also shamed by Schalke 04 in the Champions League then lost 2-5 at home against Germany en route to getting ousted in the quarterfinals.
Samuel Etoo’s move to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala was seen as among the reasons for Inter’s listless display of late. The Italian outfit signed up Diego Forlan and Mauro Zarate to fill the void but the duo has yet to contribute in a big way.
Gasperini’s appointment as Inter coach in June was met with doubts as he has never coached any major club before.
AUTHOR’S OPINION
Gasperini should have been fired earlier. His method of coaching is not suited to the Serie A. But can Inter find a replacement who could inspire the team more?
